Do I Need a Life Coach or Therapist?

Are you unsure if you should work with a life coach or a therapist? You’re not alone, it can be confusing. So let’s compare:

What is a therapist?

A therapist is a licensed health professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders.

What is a life coach?

A life coach is a person who counsels and encourages clients on personal matters and in their career.

How are they different?

A therapist can diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication for mental health disorders and a life coach can not. A life coach has experience with personal development and setting goals.

How do you know what is the right choice for you?

If you suffer from severe anxiety, depression, have a mental health disorder, or suicidal thoughts you should work with a therapist. If you want to be more successful in your life or career you should work with a life coach. A life coach offers a more holistic approach and is a mental health advocate.

Personally, I frequently recommend my clients work with both myself, as a life coach, and in conjunction with a therapist.

Can a therapist also be a life coach?

Yes, they can but it’s my experience that you want to work with a life coach that has lived their own personal transformation and is a living embodiment of what you’re trying to create in your life.

Can a life coach also be therapist?

Only if they have the credentials and license to do so. A professional life coach will have clear boundaries as to not crossover into therapy.

Now that you know the nuts and bolts of the two you can better decide which one is right for you.
