How to Grow Your Business During Difficult Economic Times

There’s no doubt that the last few years have hit small business owners hard. Through a pandemic, inflation, high gas prices, and turmoil in the world, these have been difficult waters to navigate for all.

In this distracted world it’s harder than ever to get noticed on social media and although it can be tempting to pay for ads, consistency will get you further when you don’t have a large advertising budget.

I believe now is the best time to get back to basics, I like to take a 3 prong approach to organic marketing.

Organic marketing blogging social media small business

The truth is in-person networking and word of mouth is by far the best tool you have to building your know, like, and trust factor. When people meet you in-person, they believe in you and your mission, they will happily tell others about you. You can’t beat this kind of organic (and free) marketing.

My next favorite is blogging and before you say what I always hear, “But I’m not a good writer.” you don’t have to be. It’s so simple to put a step-by-step blog post together. People want value, they want help. If you think about blogging as a means to get traffic to your website then it’s worth putting in the effort.

Then of course social media can’t be beat, there’s a platform (or three) for every kind of business. My favorites are Facebook, Instagram, Google My Business, LinkedIn, Alignable, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, and TikTok. You don’t have to have a presence on all of them, some are best as B2B (business to business) and some are best for local, service-based businesses. Social media is easy to use and it lets your business be seen by people all over the world for free.

In a world where everyone is clamoring to get attention now is the best time to take a breath, step back and access what got you to where you are now and what you need to do to expand to the next level.

As a business owner for nearly 20 years I have seen the ups and downs of the economy. It takes tenacity to be a business owner during slower times, but when you love what you do and you have a strong mission to help, it’s so worth it.

The good news is, it always bounces back, and so do you!
